The 1621 Harvest Feast
by KATE WATERS
Photographs by RUSS KENDALL

Sometime between September 21 and November 9, 1621, the English colonists, whom we call pilgrims, and the Wampanoag people shared a harvest celebration. Through time, stories and popular myths have evolved about the event that has become known as the first Thanksgiving.

This is the story of what may have actually happened during those days as told by Dancing Moccasins, a 14-year-old Wampanoag boy, and Resolved White, a 6-year-old English boy. It is a story about family traditions, games, hunting and cooking food, and a harvest feast that lasted for several days.
